We have a teaser trailer for The Marvels, Marvel’s big fall release, and it’s time to talk about it here on Coming Attractions.
What do I need to know about the MCU going in?
Based on the characters it seems like knowledge of the first Captain Marvel movie and last year’s Ms. Marvel TV show will be essential. I haven’t gotten to these yet, so I’ll be brushing up on them before November. It also seems like the current multiverse/jumping around dimensions thing will be important.
When can I see it?
Presumably triggered by the underperformance and the reception of Quantumania, Disney pushed it from summer to fall. It will land in theaters on November 10. This release window has seen mixed returns for Disney, with The Eternals being basically a flop in 2021 and Wakanda Forever doing solid business last year.
Okay, but what do we see in the trailer?
We see what looks like a lot of fun! It appears as if the story will center on a power mix-up of our three main leads. It gives me a vibe of Freaky Friday, and I’m here for it. We see the characters randomly popping into the situations of other characters but also teaming up. It could be an interesting dynamic where they seem scattered but also together. I’m just as intrigued by what we don’t see. We don’t have Kang or any other big, bad villain. And we don’t see many other gestures to broader MCU goings on. It looks to be a fun and focused, character-driven space-hopping adventure.
Am I excited about it?
I’m pretty excited about it, but still cautious this early. It doesn’t do me too much good to get excited about it 7 months early anyway. Like I said, I still need to watch Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel, so after I do, I’ll probably be more excited about it. But from what I’ve heard, I’ll like those projects and should like this, too. At the very least it looks to be more vibrant and colorful than many recent Marvel efforts, and it looks to be a better use of the women in the MCU than the infamous team poses moment from the end of Endgame. I’m also excited by the idea of Marvel slowing down. Shifting things back a bit to give more time between projects should make them more exciting and give them more time to work on effects and other minor details like having a story (not a minor detail). This trailer looks like a positive step in the right direction on several fronts.
Though almost 2 minutes long, this teaser still doesn’t offer much. One wonders if a full trailer will come out in a few weeks accompanying Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3. Either way what we do have here is enough to warrant some hype. It doesn’t look to be the same CGI blob of a world that several recent Marvel efforts have been (I do say this as a negative even as I enjoyed some of those films). There’s a distinct energy to this trailer, and that alone makes it exciting.
