Very few horror movies last past the second act if the characters in the movie are actually fans of horror movies.
Any red-blooded moviegoer would bolt out the front door and never look back sometime after the first instance of Creepy Bugs Fluttering Inside the House, Scary Old Timey Music Wafting Through the Vents, and most definitely by the time of the “Accidental” Fall That Sidelines a Key Character.
Despite employing several of the cliches stated above — and probably a half-dozen more — “Mama 2013” manages to frighten the living daylights out of us and leave some lingering, truly scary imagery. This is to the credit of director Andy Muschietti, his co-writing team, and a top-notch Mama 2013 cast. (Mama, which is executive produced by horror icon Guillermo del Toro, is an extension of a three-minute short that Muschietti and his sister Barbara created.)
We’re getting at least three or four jump-in-your-seat stingers, plus some of the most creative and chilling nightmare sequences in recent memory. A 19th-century stylized dream (which is actually a metaphorical memory) sees a deranged young woman creating bloody horror before jumping off a cliff with her newborn, all from the point of view of a madman. This is far more innovative than what you’re likely to see in other movies about masked, carefree giants chasing stupid teenagers through the woods.
In the Mama horror movie prologue, we learn about a shooting at a financial company after the economic collapse. A distraught manager named Lucas (Game of Thrones’s Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) comes home, and soon after, he gathers up his two young daughters, Victoria and Lily, and drives off. They end up in an abandoned house deep in the woods, where Lucas apparently intended to shoot his daughters before committing suicide.
It doesn’t work like that.
Flash forward to five years later. Lucas’ brother Jeffrey (also played by Coster-Waldau) has never given up hope. His team of searchers finally stumbles onto the very abandoned house we saw a century ago in the nightmare. Dad’s long gone, but the girls are still there — covered in mud, making strange noises, crawling on all fours in rapid fashion like wild animals. How could they have survived on their own?
The girls will be quarantined for several months while Dr. Dreyfuss (Daniel Kash) records every move they make that seems to aid in assimilation. Girls, given that Victoria keeps making cryptic references to an invisible “mom” and Lily sleeps under her bed, nibbling on fruit, twigs, the occasional bug, and screaming when someone tries to touch her. don’t look ready for ice cream and pajamas…and bedtime stories, but Jeffrey is determined to give them a normal life.
So Jeffrey and his rocker chick lover Annabelle (Jessica Chastain, with a black wig and tattooed sleeves) take the girls to a new rent-free house run by the ever-lurking Dr. Dreyfus, who will be available just wanting to keep the little ones studying.
Let the chills and spills of Mama movie horror begin. While Dr. Dreyfus is investigating an old murder at a facility a few miles away from the Forest House, Jeffrey is incapacitated by an “accident”, leaving a reluctant Annabel in charge of the girls, who are still a long way from being invited to anyone’s playgroup. (You won’t see a piece of your neighbor on the block. Anyone hears the shaking, rattling, roll going on in this house where a rocker chick lives with a creepy little girl?)
For a long time, the spooky mama has taken turns caring for the girls, terrorizing them all these years and not often seen traveling with them to the suburbs. She pops out of the screen or you can only see her head flying around the house. As soon as you see them, yeah. Thanks to a combination of CGI and a performance by Spanish actor Javier Botet, who is very skinny and very tall, this is one horrible mama. And in Mama 2013 she makes sure you end up thinking just that.
The real mother in the story is Annabel, slowly shedding her stubborn, squeaky exterior as her nurturing instincts take over. Chastain’s performance in the Oscar-nominated Zero Dark Thirty It’s a world away further proves that she is one of the best actresses of her generation. Mama 2013 cast was spot on, to say the least!
Some elements of “Mama”, including the dream sequence, are reminiscent of Japanese horror films. Madness is right around the corner when Lily plays and giggles with her off-screen mom while Annabelle does household chores. There’s also dark and wicked humor, without realizing it. Coster-Waldau is solid as a supporting character, and Megan Charpentier and Isabel Nelisse are great girls.
Mama horror movie is a thrilling ride. We fear then laugh, fear then laughs, fear then shock. Of course, in most cases, a bit of plot remains for the sequel.
It’s a super ride which I definitely would want to ride again.

She realizes that her sister’s soul is inside the butterfly and that Lily and Mama are forever connected.
