Welcome to the reformatted Scribeing TV! It’s impossible to watch all the TV shows out there right now. With some many choices, it’s hard to pick which options you should add to your watchlist. Between network TV, premium channels, and streaming services, how can you choose which shows to invest your time in? In the end, this series is meant to help give you some reasons to check out a show and reasons why I enjoyed it. Up next on the Scribeing TV is American Born Chinese!
What is American Born Chinese?
American Born Chinese blends Chinese mythology with high school drama as Jin Wang (Ben Wang) befriends new student Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu). As they get to know each other, Jin Wang gets swooped up into a conflict between the Monkey King (Daniel Wu) and the Bull Demon (Niu Mowang).

What are some reasons why you should check out American Born Chinese?
1) Representation Matters
I’ve always been a proponent that representation matters. As a predominantly Asian cast, everyone is fantastic in their roles. This is also a great introduction to Chinese mythology that I enjoyed watching. It made me curious about learning more and encouraging me to expand my reach for other shows. Wang and Liu are fantastic together in early roles and portray the plights of being from a different culture in an American high school. Even Jin’s parents Christine (Yeo Yann Yann) and Simon (Chin Han) have a great storyline about what it means to be immigrants in this country. Can’t forget that Michelle Yeoh is outstanding, as always, as Wei-Chen’s mother.
2) The fight choreography is outstanding
Yes, I’ll concede that there are a lot of cuts with the fight choreography at times but for the most part, I liked watching a great martial arts story unfold. Kudos to the stunt team and all the people who designed the fight for making them look amazing. There’s also a lot of creativity that goes into all the fight sequences that I found innovative. It’s a strong addition to an already compelling story.
3) Ke Huy Quan continues his remarkable return to Hollywood
Quan is on a hot streak right now and American Born Chinese is another reason why he’s doing amazing work now. He plays Jamie Yao, a former actor who’s in a culturally insensitive show that made him an icon in a television sitcom. He’s often the butt of jokes, but he also has a moment when he talks about wanting to do more with his career and how people didn’t take him seriously. Sounds eerily familiar doesn’t it? I’m just ecstatic that Quan is back for good!
