Who is ready to get excited by some movies? Expectations and hype can be strong forces in the cinematic experience. The trailers, the rumors, the early reviews…these all can do wonders when it comes to getting people excited for a new film release. For this upcoming weekend, we have a few reasons you should be excited about this film coming your way… Barbie.
The World
Have you seen what this film looks like? The pure joy of colors is almost blinding just based on the trailers of the film. So…much…pink. It is glorious. The production design is absurd in how well it represents what a “Barbie World” would look like. The costume designs are breathtaking and impressive. There are so many questions floating in my head as I process how this world works. There are so many possibilities of what this world can do and that is so exciting. You will never be able to forget how this film looks and that is something special.
The Music
How many popular artists can you possibly shove into this film? Dua Lipa set the stage with her new song “Dance the Night”. This song is a jam, and I cannot wait to see this group of Barbies and Kens dancing the night away. Billie Eilish brings the moodiness and existence crisis of the film to shake things up. Charlie XCX, Sam Smith, Nicki Minaj, Khalid, HAIM, and more…and more…and more. Even Ryan Gosling gets to tear down the house with his original musical number “I’m Just Ken”. This soundtrack is going to kill it and it will live rent-free in all of our minds.
The Cast
What can be more stacked than the soundtrack? The cast. First off…Margot Robbie is incredible. She is one of the greatest talents in the world and she was the most inspired casting as Barbie that they could have found. Resident hot weirdo Ryan Gosling is hands down the best choice to play the world’s most famous boy toy. His affection and demeanor are impressive. But wait…there are more! Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and JOHN CENA! Oh…and there are even more too. This film is unbelievably filled to the brim with talent.
The Story
How smart is this film? It makes a lot of sense based on who wrote it. Al la Toy Story 4, we find Barbie having an existential crisis of what her life really is and how she got here. There are plenty of paths this story can take but seeing Barbie and Ken hitting our world is so exciting. They seem like the perfect choices to bounce off so many timely themes and ideas. We can enjoy the crazy “Barbie World” as well as her journey through a world so much more influential as well.
Gerwig & Baumbach
What a powerful cinematic duo? Baumbach has his co-writer slot, but he has plenty of his own works to keep things running. He is a talented and intelligent writer who can most certainly find the complexities that can be explored. But Gerwig is so ready. She is proven now, and we can come in super excited to see her and Barbie. There are so many great traits that Gerwig brings to the table. There is so much talent behind the camera and they will deliver a film worthy of all the hype.
