Who is ready to get excited by some movies? Expectations and hype can be strong forces in the cinematic experience. The trailers, the rumors, the early reviews…these all can do wonders when it comes to getting people excited for a new film release. For this upcoming weekend, we have a few reasons you should be excited about this film coming your way… BlackBerry
True Business Stories
Ever since The Social Network landed in theaters in 2010, the landscape of what types of stories can work as films. No one thought a film about social media platforms could be so compelling. Since then, so many different companies have gotten similar treatment on the big screen. We have seen Steve Jobs tackling Apple products and now we will be getting BlackBerry. 20 years ago, this would have been a hard pass. But today, could this be the next The Social Network? There is enough here to give this one at least a try to see if it reaches those (unfair but) expected expectations.
IFC
What else could give you hope for this story that is potentially too mundane to be a film? When you have the right studio behind, that can be enough hype to push you forward. A24…Neon…and IFC. These prestige independent studios are enough name recognition to give a film a try. This plus the new era of business-focused drama/thrillers, there are enough environmental reasons to capture enough excitement to give this one a try.
Jay Baruchel & Glenn Howerton
What would be the cherry on top of this new drama? The leads. You get the right cast; you can sell almost anything. But what a strange duo this film boasts. Baruchel and Howerton are a couple of actors who are certainly much better known for comedy than drama. But the trailer does seem to allude to the fact that each of them gets to flex their funny bones in the film as well. But it is the shock and potential of seeing each actor deliver a strong dramatic turn that gives this film a whole new layer of intrigue. The film is going all out with a silver fox look for Baruchel and a bald look for Howerton but there seems to be more promise than just some cheap hair and make-up changes.
