Who is ready to get excited by some movies? Expectations and hype can be strong forces in the cinematic experience. The trailers, the rumors, the early reviews…these all can do wonders when it comes to getting people excited for a new film release. The Cast
How can you not be excited on some level about the cast in this film? Many of the stars of the Fast franchise are not the strongest actors (traditionally speaking) but they sure are stars and have a lot of fun together. It basically feels like every single big name from the whole franchise (except Dwayne Johnson) is back for this next entry. Jason Statham is probably the most exciting return (at least for me) but we are also getting the introductions of Jason Mamoa, Rita Moreno, and Brie Larson as well. This just might be the most star-studded cast in a film not directed by Wes Anderson.
The Beginning of the End
As a film lover who is not a huge fan of this franchise, what is most exciting about this latest outing? The promise of an end. This might seem like a backhanded compliment but after the end of the seventh entry, this franchise felt completely aimless. Giving some urgency and a sense of purpose to this new film makes for a better story. Vin Diesel said this is the “Beginning of the end”…let’s see the stakes that they deliver on it then.
The Action
What was most frustrating about Fast 9? The absurdity and the complete lack of logic to the action. SPACE!?!? Do they know how magnets work? But there is a promise to go back to the practical effects-driven action sequences this time around. That is for the best. Action is the best when it feels grounded, and you can feel it. Practical effects were a highlight for this franchise for a while and it is exciting to see them take it back.
Back on Course
Yet again, what the hell was Fast 9? The latest entry lost a lot of fans (and fed a lot to the franchise’s critics). But this new entry seems to bring the franchise to a head and tries to learn from the last pair of entries. The fifth through seventh entries of the franchise were the peak moments. The absence of Paul Walker has been a specter over the films since. But there is some serious hope that this one can potentially recapture the spark. We shall see.
