Who is ready to get excited by some movies? Expectations and hype can be strong forces in the cinematic experience. The trailers, the rumors, the early reviews…these all can do wonders when it comes to getting people excited for a new film release. Zachery Levi
Shazam! would have never worked without the right actor bringing this hero to life, right? You need someone who can sell the physicality and be a big bulking hero. You need someone who can sell the zingers and comedic elements that bring so much to this hero. You also need someone who can convincingly portray a child inside the body of a large man. Outside of Tom Hanks in Big, Zachery Levi just may have found the perfect version of that dichotomy. Seeing that Levi is back at it again, I am certainly excited to experience the fun that Levi brings back to the table.
The Family
What was the biggest surprise from the first film? The fact that Billy’s foster family also gets the powers of Shazam! and is able to fight alongside him. This new film promises even more of this including that grown cast of Grace Caroline Currey, Adam Brody, Meagan Good, Ross Butler, and D.J. Cotrona. The trailers seem to allude to a splintered group and that opens the film up to some strong dramatic potential. Will David F. Sandberg flesh that out? We will all have to see it! But a whole crew of superheroes has plenty of potentials.
The New Additions
What kind of star power can Warner Brothers muster up for this latest entry in the DCEU? First off, they got legendary British actress Helen Mirren to join the fray. That is quite exciting in itself! But she isn’t alone, is she? She leads a pack of sibling Gods who are here to knock out the titular heroes down a few pegs. Lucy Liu who is a legend in her own right as an action star joins Mirren. Throw in rising star Rachel Zegler (fresh off her breakout turn in West Side Story), and you have yourself an exciting cast of characters. According to recent TV spots, we will be getting some big-named cameos coming our way as well.
The Comic Book Thrills
Shazam! was filled with all kinds of crazy elements that made this a fantastical fantasy venture. This time around we get a…DRAGON! What?! I am down to watch Levi in his bulked-up suit take on a dragon at the home of the Phillies, Citizens Bank Park. This might not be the strongest argument, but I know have dragons could have the potential of making some crazy action set pieces. Oh…and that shot of Levi flying around a reshuffling skyline of Philadelphia looks interesting too.
