The Wasteland Rewind: Snatch (2000)

Directed by: Guy Ritchie
Starring: Brad Pitt, Jason Statham, Stephen Graham, Benicio del Toro

There are so many films that come out every week let alone every year, aren’t there? We can get so caught up in trying to keep up with the latest awards contenders, box office hits, and culturally relevant pieces that we don’t have enough time to turn back the clock and check out films from the past. But it is so important to expand our horizons and experience the art that has set the stage for today’s cinema. You might need to find the time, so it is important to make wise choices with what you spend that time watching. Whether we head back 10 years, 50 years, or even 100 years, there is great cinema throughout the years. But let’s rewind the clock and here are some reasons why you should check out… Snatch (2000)

Guy Ritchie

There are very few directors who have such a distinct style and attitude as Guy Ritchie. All his films are filled to the brim with cool characters, sharp editing, and high energy. When he is delivering street-level gangster movies, he is doing his thing better than anyone else around. Few directors can boast such a strong wheelhouse as Ritchie does. Snatch is unique in the fact that it just might be his best. From the opening credits until the final roll, there is non-stop fun and energy. It should be criminal to make films this cool, and I am pretty sure only Soderbergh can do it better. Oh…and you will laugh plenty of times too. Nothing quite like that snark and barbs of a Guy Ritchie flick.

The Cast

Calling this a stacked cast just might be the understatement of the century. Ritchie knows so well who needs to be in his roles and who can deliver the needed performance. They don’t need to be huge names, but they can be the most rugged, underappreciated British character actors that have the spunk and chops to deliver what Ritchie expects out of them. Case in point…Alan Ford and Rade Serbedzija. Then you have some breakout stars like Jason Statham, Stephen Graham, Lennie James, and many more. Throw a couple of bigger names like Benicio Del Toro and, of course, Brad Pitt, and you have yourself a darn good cast. And do you like daags?

The Plot

Snatch, like plenty of his other films, is here to subvert your expectations of how a crime thriller should go.

I seriously mean the plot as well…and not one of those jokes and then just showing a shirtless picture of Brad Pitt. There is a twisted web of lies and dastardly deeds. You never know exactly how this film will play out. Heck…it is so dense that you might forget by the next time that you watch it. There are so many moving pieces that you will be led down plenty of false roads in the need to make sure that you have an unexpected ride. Could Ritchie write some plots that are a little more straightforward? Sure, he could. But what would be the fun in that? You don’t come to a Ritchie flick for simplicity. You come for the excitement and craziness.
