Nods to the Games
When you watch the trailers for this Illumination adaptation of this classic video game, you can tell someone was paying attention. There are so many characters from all across this franchise from Mario to Luigi to Peach to Bowser to Donkey Kong. But it is not just the characters that get to leap onto the big screen. We can see Rainbow Road! And Donkey Kong Country! Those things alone are enough to get plenty of hype around this new animated adventure. They even have some power-ups including the fire flower (which Donkey Kong gets to use).
The Animation
The film looks gorgeous, doesn’t it? The world of Mario is so colorful and vibrant. The colors are rich and iconic as each character has a specific color scheme. When you look at the trailers, posters, and stills, there is so much color and vibrance to enjoy. The story could be pedestrian or the characters flat, but we know for a fact that this iconic video game world looks like it is wonderfully rendered on the big screen.
Jack Black
How can’t Jack Black get you excited for any project that he is in? His Bowser cosplay to his spiked turtle shell tuxedo at the premiere, this actor is all in on bringing this legendary video game villain to life. Where some of the other cast members have fans scratching their heads, Black is a pitch-perfect choice for the Koopa King. We hear his snarling and boisterous voice in the first trailer and that devious grin. Yes…that is Bowser, and we love it so much.
Action
This film seems to promise plenty of fun and colorful action along the way. We will see Bowser and his giant flying castle laying waste to poor civilizations (like the poor penguins). We will get exciting team-ups (and fights) including Mario and Donkey Kong. But the most exciting prospect is seeing Mario Kart come to life in the form of a crazy race on Rainbow Road. This is going to be a wonderful thrill ride for the whole family.
